Description
Moses bows his head and humbly receives the Ten Commandments, feet covered and face turned away from us.
The sky swirls with clouds heralding the majesty of God, as the mount was covered with clouds before Moses ascended up it to receive God’s Law. Heaven bursts through the storm and God appears, writing the Commandments on the tablet himself.
He looks down kindly, full of fatherly love, and passes the stone tablets to His chosen people. The next step of Salvation History has begun.
Twin rays jut out of Moses’ halo in reference to the Israelites saying his face was radiant, literally glowing, when he descended from the mountain. Moses covered his face, only uncovering it when he was in the presence of God in the Ark of the Covenant.
In God’s halo, although He is depicted specifically as the Father (in the same clothing as style as the Trinity painting), His halo has the equilateral triangle signifying that it is the whole Trinity present. And at this point in history, the Word has not yet become Flesh, and the Spirit had never been seen as a dove. Depicting God with emphasis on His Oneness, would be appropriate.
This is one of 12 paintings for the Ascension Press program “What We Believe” found here.
As part of the program I worked closely with the team to come up with each composition, and this one in particular emphasized Moses’ humility without having him be fully turned away, the Father’s presence without being too dramatic, and all of creation resounding to the presence of God.
