Adam sits, completely passively, forgetting his duty to protect his wife, as Eve gives him the apple. She gestures up at the tree, and the serpent who is not visible. Adam is right there. He knows what just went down.
He raises his hand in a weak rebuttal or question, but ultimately he will eat the fruit as well. Eve dominates and makes the first action. She forgets her duty to her husband and takes control of everything.
They are supposed to be helpmates to each other, Eve born from Adam’s side to rule with him. But both forget themselves and the ruin of the world comes about.
This is one of 12 paintings for the Ascension Press program “What We Believe” found here.
As part of the program I worked closely with the team to come up with each composition, and for this one we fell in love with Wenzel Peter Roberto Morgenthaler’s Adam and Eve in the Earthy Paradise, but just the figures of Adam an Eve.
Keeping the figures who so perfectly embodied the symbolism we wanted, I swapped the faces and the garden.
Adam is the same model I used for the images of Jesus in this series, and on purpose. Jesus is the New Adam who will undo the sin of the first Adam.
