Description
I love the regal beauty of Pinturicchio’s (aka Bernardino di Betto) madonna. The black veil symbolizes her sorrow during the Passion, the red dress the Passion itself. The delicate gold trim and almost invisible sheer veil make Mary look like a queen.
Pinturicchio (meaning “little painter”) got his nickname for being short. He lived from 1454 to 1513 and painted a large breadth of works for the Church all throughout Italy during the Renaissance, many of which still survive to this day.
