Description
NOTE: I only have one of each frame in stock at any given time. Should you purchase a painting with a frame that has already been sold before I can update the listing, I will contact you about the increased lead time and give you the option to purchase just the painting (in which case you will be refunded for the frame). Since the frames are handcrafted from scratch, it takes about a month to arrive at my door. With any luck this will not be an issue and I’ll always have the frames in stock. If a frame is out of stock it will be noted above the add to cart button above.
Master copy was painted on an archival panel; linen mounted on 3/8″ plywood. It cannot hang by itself.

Our Lady gazes down, with hands delicately folded in prayer. A warm light suffuses the scene, shining brightly from the top, signifying the light of heaven. As a result we see a beautiful array of colors in the shadows formed out of the light bouncing off Mary’s face.
Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato’s work was held in high regard through the mid-19th century, and went through a huge revival in the 20th when interest returned to the Baroque style of art. Very little of his life is known.
His paintings of Our Lady are extremely well known to this day, this being one of many that you probably have seen a hundred times but never knew who painted it.

This alla prima study is part of my training arc for painting the Litany of Loretto Marian series, which I’ve begun to develop on my Patreon! You can find out more about it here.
No prints will be made of the master copy studies.
