Description

Saint Dymphna lived in the 7th century as the daughter of a pagan king who ruled over what is now Ireland. Her mother, a Christian who raised her daughter after Christ, died when Dymphna was still young. Her father went into a deep state of distress that soon brought him to the verge of a mental collapse. The king’s advisors suggested a second marriage, and the king agreed as long as his new wife looked exactly as his old.

They searched far and wide for a suitable bride, but the king rejected them all. They then suggested his daughter, for, after all, she did look like her mother. The king was shocked, but then began to agree with his advisors and began to desire after his daughter. When he approached Dymphna, she was appalled and refused, but he would not give up.

Dymphna had to flee her home and cross the sea, but spies followed her. When her father caught up to her and her group, he coaxed and tried to manipulate Dymphna into marrying him. When she refused again he fell to threats. Dymphna still refused and told him that she had made a vow of perpetual virginity.

Enraged, the king leapt from his horse in pure fury, and cut off the head of his own daughter. Dymphna was just 15 years old.

After having lived with her father as he struggled against his various mental illnesses, Dymphna knows what it’s like to see a loved one fall deeper and deeper into mental distress. While the story is shocking, you must remember that it is the story of a daughter and her dad; how, day after day, Dymphna took care of her dad, just as you take care of your loved one who struggles with mental illness or you are taken care of by loved ones. Dymphna knows the pain of being helpless against the ravages of the mind.

In her age there were no hospitals, counselors, or medications to heal the wounds of the mind. But in our age there are. Reach out, get help.

And talk to this great Saint. She wants to help you just as she so dearly wanted to help her dad but was unable.

The traditional method of praying for Dymphna’s intercession is as follows. Pray it for yourself or for another. The chaplet comes with a card with these simple prayers on it.

••••••••••••••••

Begin at the crucifix with the Sign of the Cross.

On the medal of St. Dymphna, tell her your intentions.

On the first white bead, pray an Our Father, and on the second white bead, pray a Hail Mary for the Pope’s intentions. On each of the fifteen remaining beads, pray a Glory Be.

Each bead is in honor of St. Dymphna’s fifteen years of life. On the red beads, honor her martyrdom. On the white, honor her virginity. On the green, pray for the relief of emotional disorders.

End with this prayer:

Lord, our God, you graciously chose St. Dymphna as patroness of those afflicted with mental and emotional illnesses. She is an inspiration and a symbol of charity to all who ask for her intercession. Please grant, Lord, through the prayers of this pure youthful martyr, consolation and healing to all who suffer such trials, and especially for [mention your request]

I beg you, Lord, to hear the prayers of St. Dymphna on my behalf. Grant me patience in suffering and acceptance of Your Divine Will. Please fill my heart with hope, and grant me the relief and strength I so much desire. I ask this through Christ our Lord who suffered agony in the garden.

Amen.

Each chaplet is made from different stone beads. The spacers are silver oxidized metal and black czech glass. The stone beads are particularly my favorite because they easily get cold and are heavy, helping you focus on the importance of what you are praying.

The medal, centerpiece and crucifix are all silver oxidized medals.

The chaplet is strung on 49-strand beading wire with bead crimps ad wire protectors, so it is super strong. Like all my rosaries and chaplets, it is covered under a warranty that if it should break for any reason I will repair it for free. You only pay shipping and any replacement parts; the major beads and medals.

Stones for each chaplet:
Earthy – jasper, white tridacna
Adventure – aventurine, white jade
Airy – rhodonite, jasper, white jade
Sweet – rhodonite, river stone, chlcedony
Bold – mookaite, African green opal, fossil jasper
Vibrant – jasper
Vivid – red and green jasper, tan feldspar, white river stone

Your Impact

For every order, 10% of all proceeds will go to organizations who provide resources to at risk women before and after birth.

The first is The Pregnancy Care Center of Rockford. They area a local organization to me,  providing resources and care for free to women in crisis pregnancies, from ultrasounds to parenting classes to post abortion healing.

The second is the Sisters of Life, a newer religious community founded in 1991 in New York to promote the dignity of every human life. They have houses for women to come live with them during and after their pregnancy as they get back on their feet, as well as counseling for post abortion healing, and other missions.
