This title was always going to be inspired by Our Lady of Grace, but after my trip to Italy, I was inspired by the landscaping and I just couldn’t get the Mother part of the title out of my head so I added a little baby Jesus in Mary’s womb!
Mary is the mystical spouse of the Holy Spirit, and as such, she is tasked with distributing all the graces of the Holy Spirit. We learn form the Saints and Church Fathers that all graces pass through Mary. She is the Mediatrix of Grace – one of her relatively newer titles.
This is why for the image of the Miraculous Medal – which is the image of Our Lady of Grace from the apparitions to St. Catherine Labouré in 1830 – the rays coming from Mary’s hands symbolize the graces she pours out on those who go to her. Strikingly, rays of light were not coming out of all of Mary’s rings on her fingers because she still had graces more graces ready to give that were not being asked for.
So for this image, I loved the connection between the imagery of Our Lady of Grace and how it is intrinsically bound up with her motherhood of Christ.
