Description
The lamb standing as though slain from Revelations, holding the banner of victory, standing on the book with seven seals; this is Jesus.
The lamb slain, unspotted and perfect, dying on the Cross for our sins. The lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. The lamb who opens the seven seals and begins the Final Judgement.
In this one tableau, we have the whole drama of Revelations standing in the balance. Mystical symbolism comes together. The Mass is echoed as we say three times “Lamb of God”. The crossed halo firmly signifies this as Jesus, as little as it looks from our mental image of a man with a beard.
Only the Lamb of God can break open the seven seals and begin the Final Judgement of the world.
This is one of 12 paintings for the Ascension Press program “What We Believe” found here.
As part of the program I worked closely with the team to come up with each composition, and for this one it was particularly important to emphasize the scene with all simplicity.
